It is my pleasure to welcome you all here today. Congratulations on taking this new step in your education. Last April, our university was renamed Kaichi International University and, in keeping with our international name, this year we are pleased to welcome students from China, Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh and Brazil, and of course from Japan.

I would like to take this chance to briefly speak about international educational exchange. Has everyone heard of the Fulbright Program? United States Senator J. William Fulbright created a scholarship program in 1946 to promote international educational exchange and increase mutual understanding between the United States and the people of other countries. Senator Fulbright opposed the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and dreamed of a world united through humane diplomacy. Senator Fulbright himself received a Rhodes Scholarship when he was a university student and spent three years studying abroad at Oxford University in England. By spending substantial time living in another country, we learn the ways, speech, and history of that culture, and serve as a bridge between communities and countries.

I was deeply moved by the words of Senator Fulbright. He believed that international educational exchange would humanize international relations by contributing to a sense of common humanity. “The Fulbright Program aims to bring a little more knowledge, a little more reason, and a little more compassion into world affairs and thereby to increase the chance that nations will learn at last to live in peace and friendship”. I wholeheartedly endorse this mission statement and believe cultural sensitivity will go far to benefit world peace. By studying aboard, or by studying alongside international students, we learn to enjoy the similarities we share with foreign people rather than dispute our differences.

International students study Japanese language, culture, and history here at Kaichi International University and become a part of the local community. Japanese students become friends and share culture and language with our international students, and we all study and grow together, learning from one another.

I hope you will make the most of your four years here at university: be productive, cultivate yourself, engage in research, join extracurricular activities, make lifelong friends, and enjoy yourselves. All the very best with your studies!

Thank you and welcome to Kaichi International University.
